MARIPOSA, CA - Three men have been arrested in connection to a gold heist at a Mariposa museum.

On Sept. 28, two individuals entered the California State Mining and Mineral Museum, smashed display cases and stole gold and gems, California Highway Patrol Lt. Mike Troxell said. The pair stole more than $1 million in gold and precious metals.

The theft was captured on surveillance cameras in the museum.

Troxell said CHP worked with the Mariposa Sheriff's Department, the Placer County Sheriff's Department and Sacramento Police Department to investigate the case. Detectives followed many leads and used physical evidence that led them to the three suspects.

Troxell said police arrested:

  • Edward Rushing III, 40, from El Dorado County, was arrested for multiple felonies, including drug charges, and is believed to be a conspirator in the museum theft
  • Mathew Campbell, 43, from Sutter County, was arrested for conspiracy to commit robbery.
  • Jonathan Matis, 41, from Sutter County, was arrested for conspiracy to commit robbery, armed robbery, vehicle theft and vandalism.

Detectives continued to investigate and more arrests and charges were possible in connection to the crime.
